Highlights from Fall 2014 Bridal Market in New York

October 28, 2014

In its annual Fall incarnation, New York Bridal Market is the most exciting time of the year for the bridal industry. With everyone in town from all over the country, it seems like it’s one big networking party where you can meet the people behind exciting brands face to face, where breaking news and latest industry gossip travels like fire, and where deals are made easily over a drink.

It is the wedding industry’s main event, so we encourage all of our clients to attend and participate. This year, we worked with our newest client HoneyBook on partnering up with ISS Magazine to organize a big Bridal Market industry party. The event attracted planners and vendors from New York and beyond and it was great to see several of our clients also in attendance.

But one man definitely stole the show that night! Hendrik, the founder of Bows ‘N Ties, flew in from San Francisco to bring its first Bow Tie Bar to New York City. With the help of the tall, dark and handsome model Daniel, guests learned how to properly tie a bow tie – a skill that many planners can use for wedding day emergencies.

To stay on top of the bridal fashion trends, we attended a lot of runway shows and especially enjoyed the voracity of the new wave of design talent that seems to be pushing the bridal fashion industry towards a more edgy future. After hosting the show for our own edgy designer Della Giovanna, we checked out another unusual newcomer Houghton. The show’s loud hip hop beats, champagne bar, and an open presentation format were the perfect background for the loose, informal collection with elements of light sky blue of the designer Katharine Polk.

Kelly Faetanini delighted us with the ephemeral elegance of her newest collection – now in its third year.

Isabelle Armstrong was another newcomer who packed the house, although this 2-year-old brand showcases more traditional, grand ballroom elegance. I thought the groom leading the bride for the final look was a nice touch:

We were invited to a breakfast hosted by Group 868, a showroom that represents several international designers, including Italian designer Elisabetta Polignano and Colombian designer Francesca Miranda, who we met in person:

I also attended the group show by JLM, which included the polar visions by Lazaro and Hayley Paige, and went to see the new collections by Amsale, who this year showed at a new, much bigger location accommodating a full crowd of press and fans.

The week of shows and meetings was crowned by two big events – Martha Stewart Weddings‘ 20th Anniversary Party and the annual Bridal Market party hosted by The Knot. We started off wearing platinum to the renowned Pierre Hotel where Martha Stewart’s big anniversary bash was held:

Then, despite the heavy rain outside, we headed off to New York Public Library where The Knot’s celebration was already in full swing:

I won’t lie, I enjoyed wearing my silver and black Betsy Johnson number paired with diamond chandelier earrings by Yael Designs as well as some extremely handsome arm candy, outfitted by Bows ‘N Ties:

New York’s Bridal Market was both extremely fun and extremely exhausting, though I can’t even imagine how all our editor friends feel as they often have to attend up to a dozen shows every day and then write about them, often within hours! As for me, I feel like I’m still recovering.

See you in April,

– Sasha Vasilyuk

October 24, 2014

Wedding dress designer Della Giovanna is known for pushing the envelope and delivering original, eye-catching looks – and the debut of her new 2015 collection this past week in New York was just as cutting edge. With such a dynamic collection consisting of 16 beautifully diverse pieces it’s no wonder the show received such rave reviews.  Here are just a few of the looks that completely “wowed” the audience during the show.

Not only were the dress designs flawless, but they were also accessorized beautifully with rings by Yael Designs. These accessories gave the models just the right amount of sparkle as they made their way down the catwalk.

As the night drew to a close the designer, Michelle Della Giovanna, could be seen striking a pose with her models as cameras captured the moment.

After such an amazing show here’s what some of the press had to say:

The Knot absolutely loved all the “gold chain mail bodices, bold colors, cool accessories (like a leather harness!) and creative silhouettes.”

Della Giovanna’s trendy wedding collection caught the eye of  New York Magazine‘s The Cut, who featured the entire show on their website.

Martha Stewart Weddings also felt they needed to share such innovative designs with their readers, and highlighted the looks in their gown gallery.

Brides couldn’t wait to jump on the band wagon and promote the 2015 collection “inspired by the intricate art of medieval armor.”

The Man Behind The Cake Empire: Ron Ben-Israel

October 3, 2014

Pastry guru Ron Ben-Israel has established a strong presence in New York City, catering to the luxury crowd of soonly-weds. And now the cake making brand has catapulted from their compact studio space in Soho to a much larger location in the historic Garment District. Taking over the entire building floor, the Ron Ben-Israel brand will be expanding its services to host a bootcamp for brides-to-be, mentorship for aspiring cake designers as well as industry events.

Ron-Ben Israel’s rise to the top was not an easy feat. Starting his career as a dancer, Ron channeled his discipline and dedication to the craft of cake design, which eventually allowed him to create unique one of a kind confections that the world has come to love.

We had a chance to catch up with Ron and find out more of what makes Ron-Ben Israel Wedding Cakes truly unique.

I Do PR: You’ve had an incredibly interesting life, complete with service in the Israeli army, a Canadian dance tour, and learning the art of food in France. Of all these different aspects of your past, what inspired you to work with cakes?

Ron-Ben Israel: The transition into cakes was not planned. As an artist, cake was the next step in my journey to stay in New York. It was a means of survival. I did many odd jobs from catering to dressing fashion shows and eventually tabletop design. It was when Mikimoto asked me to do display cakes for the store that one day Martha Stewart and her then assistant, Darcy Miller, walked in talking about starting a wedding magazine, and the rest was history.

Besides serving clients, you also teach young cake designers. Why did you decide to start teaching?

RBI: I started teaching from the start. At the beginning it was all about fostering community, and using your knowledge to help others perfect the craft of cake design. I’m incredibly proud of my students, and I learn from them almost as much as they learn from me. One day they will become my competition, and that drives me to work hard and continue to grow my skills and challenge myself.

You’re involved in community projects including City Harvest, Bid Against Hunger and others. Would you recommend other wedding vendors get involved in more projects outside the industry?

RBI: Yes! We work in a luxury couture industry, and I consider myself to be very fortunate. You really have to take a moment and step back to realize how lucky we are to do what we love for a living, and there are so many others out there that are suffering. Whether it’s a charity inside the wedding industry or outside, it doesn’t really matter.   You choose what’s available and what you’re passionate about.

What celebrity would you love to make a wedding cake for?

RBI:   I’m not so much into celebrity culture – to me every bride is a celebrity. But if I had to choose, it would be someone like Chita Rivera.

Cakes designed for Frank Gehry and Sex and The City 2 Premiere

If you died and went to heaven, what kind of cake would they serve there?

RBI: My mother made a cake called Kugelhopf that was my favorite! It’s an Austrian-Hungarian yeast cake with vanilla and lemon rind.
