Carats & Cake has been in the press a lot. How did you get there?

Based on my prior experience in VC, I saw the power of PR and how it could propel a company forward, so publicity and creating the opportunity to be able to tell our story was something we invested in early. Our strategy was always about being selective and focusing on building awareness in the right places. Our first feature was in a business outlet because while our launch appeared to be consumer focused, we have always been focused on smarter businesses, so we wanted to be seen through that lens. Over the years we have continued to focus on business press such as Business Insider, Time and Inc. as well as lifestyle outlets like this recent Harper’s Bazaar story.

How important was PR to your marketing strategy?

PR was a big focus of our marketing efforts not only to drive awareness, but also to build relationships with brands and other partners. Establishing a voice within like-minded, trusted publications allowed Carats & Cake to gain awareness, early on, among the right consumer, but more importantly the right vendor audiences.

How were you able to get featured?

We partnered with a nimble PR firm as well as networked and built our independent relationships with editors. From the beginning, we really tried to find our own voice.  Carats & Cake didn’t want to compete with the talk about wedding inspiration. We wanted to start a smart conversation about local businesses that make this industry great. In the beginning, this was definitely more challenging as people saw weddings and naturally wanted to write about weddings, not wedding businesses, so we’d get lumped into one industry bucket. But as editors and outlets got to know us and the company, they started to recognize our unique perspective and were kind enough to help us spread the word.

How has media attention changed Carats & Cake?

Our strategic media coverage helped us differentiate our business from the rest.  Whether its business profiles in Business Insider or Harper’s Bazaar or features in Who What Wear or Town & Country, our press coverage allows us to create a defensible position in the wedding market that is business-focused and aligned to an elevated, modern lifestyle consistent with consumers and vendors at the top end of the industry.

What advice would you give to wedding professionals looking to get publicity?

Consistency is key.  If every piece tells a different story, press will only get you so far. What you want is for audiences to understand who you are and for each piece to build on the other by reaffirming your position, perspective and brand.

Sept. 29: WIPA New York launch with Marcy Blum

September 26, 2016
WIPA logo

WIPA, or Wedding Industry Professionals Association, has long been one of my favorite industry organizations. They put on very high-quality, intimate events. In fact, the first wedding industry event I’ve ever attended was a luncheon hosted by WIPA in Napa Valley.

That’s why when I moved to New York, I was baffled that the city that has everything did not have a WIPA chapter. Today, I’m happy to announce that is no longer the case.

Come celebrate WIPA New York’s launch at 6pm this Thursday, Sept. 29, and hear from none other than the queen of event planning Marcy Blum. Marcy will speak on the topic “There’s No ‘Take the Money and Run’ in Events (Being in it for the Long Haul)”.

WIPA launch is sponsored by my friends at AllSeated, who’re also known to put on awesome events, so this is going to be a Do-Not-Miss kind of evening. And, if that wasn’t enough, it’s taking place at Park Hyatt, one of my favorite NYC hotels across the street from the famed Carnegie Hall.

WHEN: Thursday, September 29, 2016, 6:30 PM – 8:30 PM

WHERE: Park Hyatt New York, 153 W. 57th Street, New York, New York 10019

Marry the Media available at iBooks + Barnes & Noble

Marry the Media wedding PR book

Wedding professionals and other small business owners often turn to me for help on how to get publicity for their business. Sometimes, they’re launching a new product or service. Other times, they have plans to turn their regional business into a national brand and are looking to get exposure in popular blogs, TV and national magazines.

After 5 years consulting for brands that have ranged from top wedding photographers to 100-person tech companies, I realized I had no way to help a small business owner that doesn’t have the means to hire a full-time publicist, but still has a story to tell.

In fact, I realized they had nowhere to turn. Wedding PR is a small niche and there are only a few public relations agencies in the world that specialize in this area. However, none of us had created educational resources that could help entrepreneurs like you master how to work with the press to get publicity for your business.

That’s why I decided to write the first book on PR specifically aimed at wedding professionals. In late June, Marry the Media: How to Gain Publicity for Your Wedding Business, launched on my PR Tools Store and on Amazon.

But still, that left out those of you who use iPad and Nook for reading. And so, long overdue, I’m happily announcing that Marry the Media is now available on Barnes & Noble and on Apple’s iBooks. It’s exciting to have my book available in multiple electronic formats!

Marry the Media book on Barnes & Noble

Marry the Media is a quick read with lots of tips you can implement today. You’ll walk away knowing:

  • Best ways to tell an effective story that gets media attention
  • Important pitching do’s and don’ts
  • What content journalists always look for
  • Best ways to leverage your press features in your marketing

I hope you get a copy for yourself or a friend who could use some guidance on publicity.

Wedding industry goes global: 21 Wedding Traditions and Superstitions

September 2, 2016
Heather Jude wedding Maid of Social

In the U.S., we have such a thriving wedding industry with a lot of active associations, industry events, not to mention a huge number of popular wedding blogs and bridal magazines. Our community is so active that it’s often easy to forget that the rest of the world gets married too 🙂

Over the last couple of years, that has been harder to ignore as the wedding industry is becoming more and more globalized. Israeli wedding designers popped up seemingly out of nowhere and quickly took over our Instagram feeds. New York Bridal Market has grown tremendously and now includes a lot of international journalists who fly in to see the latest designs coming out on the runway, just as they do with NY Fashion Week. Wedding planners from Asia, Russia, the Middle East and Africa wowing us with super luxury weddings, while more and more American planners branch out to do destination weddings abroad. In fact, for the first time the popular Engage Summit is coming to Europe.

That’s why I was glad to find this fun infographic on 21 Wedding Traditions and Superstitions from around the world. Check it out:
