Meet the Press: Elizabeth Muhmood of Bridal Musings

Bridal Musings interview

With over half a million visitors a month and 3 million followers on Pinterest, Bridal Musings is one of the most visited and well respected wedding blogs in the world. It’s even Vogue-approved! The blog’s founder Elizabeth Muhmood Kane and its editor Claire Byrne have worked on successful editorial campaigns for international brands like Disney, Macy’s, Dove, Crate & Barrel and UNICEF.

I met Elizabeth a few years ago in New York and am excited for her share a bit about herself and her tips for event professionals.

About Elizabeth: Elizabeth Muhmood Kane, a Londoner, red lipstick lover, Pinterest addict and world traveler with a penchant for all things chic and romantic who founded Bridal Musings in 2011. In 2014, Elizabeth welcomed her first full time staff member, Claire Byrne, who is now editor of the blog while she oversees the operational side of things.

How did you first become a wedding blogger?

I was an early years teacher, covered in play doh and glitter most days. I was not a reader of blogs, didn’t have a clue what ‘html’ was and wasn’t the slightest bit interested in weddings. But all that changed when my husband, Zee, proposed in 2009 and I discovered my first wedding blog. It was love at first click.

I needed my daily fix and loved the intimacy and informal nature of blogs. After our wedding in 2010, I was surprised to feel quite low and kept finding myself sneaking a peek at my favourite wedding blogs. My husband was then the editor of a technology website The Next Web and he suggested I set up a blog of my own. With a little help from Zee, a lot of Googling and a basic Tumblr template the first, cringe-worthy version of Bridal Musings was born. What started as a hobby soon became my obsession and with a lot of hard work and a little bit of luck it became my full time business

What do you like about working in the wedding industry?

I get to spend my days working with passionate, talented creatives, immersed in beautiful imagery, sharing people’s love stories and some of their happiest, once-in-a-lifetime moments. Also the majority of people who work in the wedding industry are genuinely lovely. I’ve formed some great friendships with fellow wedding bloggers who are essentially my competition but we learn so much from each other and help to lift each other up.

How do you find sources for your blog posts?

The majority of our content is submitted directly to us by wedding vendors, which has meant that we’ve built good relationships with them and often turn to them for expert quotes or images.

Our editorial calendar is mapped out months in advance, often around particular themes or seasonal content, so we tend to reach out to wedding vendors directly in good time. But then there are times when we receive an exciting email, meet an inspiring person at an event or spot something on social media that sparks an idea for a post and we follow up right away.

Sometimes we’ll turn to social media (usually Twitter or Facebook) to ask wedding vendors / experts for quotes we can include in our posts.

What is the best way to get your attention for an event professional?

Show a genuine interest in and understanding of our blog and use a personal touch. Taking the time to look at our About page, and address either Claire or myself by name in an email makes the world of difference. ‘Dear sir/madam or wedding editor’ emails are binned immediately!

Short and sweet emails are always greatly appreciated. The majority of an editor’s day is taken up with email admin, so big walls of text and numerous attachments are off-putting. Far better to provide a link to a website or Dropbox folder of images, that way, we can take a quick look and see if your product/service is the right fit for Bridal Musings without downloading or sifting through a ton of information.

What one piece of advice would you give to wedding professionals looking to get publicity?

Invest in high quality imagery. You may have the most wonderful, unique product or service but if your images are poor quality, badly styled or soul-less, then wedding bloggers are unlikely to feature them.

It’s also important to recognize that each blog and magazine has a particular aesthetic that they adhere to, so before reaching out, take a look at the last 5 posts / issues (as well as their submission guidelines) and ask yourself if your product and imagery will be a good fit.

You’ve been running Bridal Musings for 6 years! What has been your favorite project so far?

Earlier this year we worked with UNICEF (and a host of talented UK vendors) on a campaign to raise awareness about the devastating effects of child marriage. Our editor, Claire, and I and everyone involved (including our fellow wedding industry friends who helped to spread the word) worked so hard to bring our styled shoot and film to the general public’s attention and start a conversation about a cause that has become very close to our hearts.

I remember seeing that UNICEF campaign all over the place and thought it was very daring of you!

It was a controversial campaign so I was extremely nervous about how it would be received but the response was incredibly positive and overwhelming. We broke records for the most shared UNICEF campaign film ever with over 300 million views on Facebook, and 3 million YouTube views in the first week alone. This is my proudest business achievement to date, but there is still much more to be done. If you’re interested, please check out UNICEF, girlsnotbrides.org, tooyoungtowed.org to find out more.

Thank you for your time, Elizabeth. Keep up the good work at Bridal Musings!

How 27 Event Profs Used Tech to Plan a Beautiful Wedding

August 23, 2016

Technology has been a buzz word in the wedding industry for several years. I remember when I was working with Weddington Way back in 2012 when they were innovating the way women shopped for bridesmaid dresses. Soon after came The Bach, the first planning website for bachelorette parties. Using online registries and designing your own wedding website became the norm. Then, following the lead of Rent the Runway, the wedding fashion rental market exploded and we got Menguin, Vow To Be Chic and Borrowing Magnolia, among others.

In 2014, I hosted the first wedding technology conference, which was soon followed by Wed Tech Summit. Clearly, the wedding industry was adapting technologies in all its spheres in front of our eyes and the millennial couples were no longer willing or even able to plan a wedding the way their parents did before.

Still, even though many recognized the usefulness of using technology to manage such a big project as a wedding, the word technology carried an anti-artistic connotation that to some meant automated, not personalized and even cheap. Basically, ugly.

Earlier this summer, I DO PR along with 27 wedding vendors decided to change that perception and to use technology to create a truly beautiful wedding. We called it Married in Tech.

WedTech016h

Married in Tech is the first shoot of its kind! To really play off our techie theme, we staged it in the capital of tech – San Francisco – at the newest venue that embodied the idea of tech + beauty, The Pearl.

We used wedding tech startups Menguin, Weddington Way, Happily Ever Borrowed and Borrowing Magnolia to dress our entire bridal party head to toe. We used 43layers to create custom 3D printed place cards, wooden vow cards and cocktail stirrers. We used a social media-enabled photo booth by Giggle & Riot. We partnered with a San Francisco-based Podo Labs to use the world’s first stick-on camera. We even got our Menguin tuxes delivered to us by Uber.

Check out the video from the shoot by the brilliant Alex Kohn of IQ Videography:

The shoot was shown live on KTVU Morning News and the photos and video were also featured in Bridal Musings story 21st Century Love and on the Bridechilla Podcast‘s 200th anniversary show called Borrow, Don’t Buy. It’s been an exciting project and I hope it serves as inspiration for event professionals to embrace technology and innovation in their work.

What publicity have you received for your business?

Our very first feature looong ago was in Manhattan Bride Magazine. I’m proud to say, since then, we’ve been featured on CNN, The Knot, The Today Show, E!, Good Morning America, Fox, The New York Times, ABC, Anderson Live, Style Me Pretty, Brides, The New York Post, The Huffington Post, Glamour, HGTV’s Cake Boss, Elle, and The Wall Street Journal, to name a few!

I remember the first publication we got on the front page of was Style Me Pretty – there was definitely an office-wide cheer when it went live!

Was getting publicity a deliberate part of your marketing strategy?

Yes. The wedding business is a word-of-mouth referral system, so name recognition is key. If you’re in the newspapers and magazines, online, and on TV, it increases your chances of being mentioned later on by someone looking to hire a planner.

Amen! How were you able to get featured in some many press outlets?

We’ve always been very proactive about publicity. We started small with local blogs and magazines and as our company (and weddings) grew, so did our submissions and features. Of course, it helps to make personal connections with reporters to understand what we can do to make their jobs easier. And we always solicit feedback when a submission is declined so that we can learn what the outlet is looking for and improve for future submissions.

I think asking for feedback is a great tip! How has media attention changed your business?

It has helped in 3 significant ways:  One is to get the word out about Brilliant Event Planning.  Couples will see a gorgeous wedding on their favorite blog or in a magazine at their local bodega and decide to visit our website.  When they land on our website, the press placement logos help to reassure them that we are the caliber of planner they’re searching for and reinforces that we’re the best at what we do.  Finally, it’s also our experience that press begets more press… being featured in smaller outlets often results in attention from a larger outlet.

With all this experience, what advice would you give to wedding professionals looking to get publicity?

Publish, publish, publish! Set a goal to publish every event you do (no matter what size publication it ends up in).  Be sure to dedicate time and resources to accomplish it consistently – not just in the low season – and watch your press placements grow as you stick to your plan.

Some examples of the processes we have put in place are:

  • ensure our client contract has a standard image-release clause
  • request photographer selects within 2 weeks of the delivery of images to the client
  • ensure the photographer knows we are planning to submit
  • store all selects in a secure online gallery that logs the photographer name, client name and venue in an easily searchable & downloadable place
  • schedule a blog post and gallery collage to publish on our site right after the media hit goes live

Sarahs, these are amazing and specific tips. Thank you for sharing!
